What Experts Say About Security Blankets Many babies choose these blankets as their lovey or comfort item--the thing they cannot go to sleep without or need to snuggle in times of stress. As respected child development author, T. Berry Brazelton, M.D. points out in his book, Touchpoints:
“Putting a toddler to bed at this age is not for the fainthearted. The ritual of a rocking chair and a bedtime story certainly helps. A lovey--a blanket or a bear--become even more critical at bedtimes. She can fall back on it during the day and at waking periods at night. Parents often feel a bit uncertain about loveys, especially when these are ratty and pathetic. They think that a child with a lovey looks neglected. Actually, the opposite is true in my experience. When we evaluate a child at the Children’s Hospital in Boston without any knowledge of her background, we are happy to see a child who can comfort herself with a thumb or a lovey. This child has already demonstrated her inner strength. She shows us that she has been nurtured at home. The ability to self-comfort is enhanced by parents who nurture.”1
The Good Housekeeping Illustrated Book of Pregnancy and Baby Care states:
“By age eight or nine months, most children form a strong attachment to a favorite toy, a blankets, or a special object. This powerful need for something cuddly will only grow stronger after the first birthday. Experts say it’s a wonderful way for a toddler to cope with the fears and frustrations of growing up, so don’t worry about it or try to persuade your baby to give it up. Keep it handy. Tell baby-sitters about it, and be assured that having a security blanket will help her as she separates from you. If she adopts a blanket, cut it in half or buy a duplicate one, so that you have a spare should she lose the original or when it needs to be washed.”2
